Ancient archways reflect rich history of Hainan
Qiongshan District, with its long history and profound culture, is the earliest and most prosperous ancient urban area in Hainan's development. It is the core area of the national historical and cultural city of Haikou and is known as the "Qiongtai Blessed Land" with a great reputation.
According to existing historical records, since early as the Song Dynasty, many archways (a typical ancient Chinese cultural architecture) have been built in the Qiongshan District. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, the number of archways reached its peak to several hundred. The archways in Qiongshan are numerous and diverse in type, widely distributed in the streets and alleys of the city, as well as in various towns and ancient villages, becoming unique cultural symbols in this land.
