Merit Archways
In history, Qiongshan was one of the earliest regions where Central Plains culture spread to Hainan Island, giving rise to many talents and possessing rich historical and cultural connotations. According to local records, there were over a hundred merit archways in ancient Qiongshan County, mainly distributed in the downtown and other parts widely spread across the ancient villages in various towns.
The Yuxian Dongjiebu Yingzhou Archway was built to commemorate Xian Yi, a successful candidate in the Ming Jiaqing imperial examination, and Xian Guixiu, a successful candidate in the Qing Qianlong imperial examination. The Liantang Chongxiao Archway and Xiaojian Archway were together built to honor Zhang Huili, a successful candidate in the Ming Jingtai imperial examination, and Zhang Huili's nephew, Zhang Fuli, a successful candidate in the Ming Hongzhi imperial examination. In the same village as these two archways, there were once also the Shimei Archway and the Qingyun Buwu Archway.
